How to Choose Non Profit Credit Counseling

When you’re in trouble with debt and you need non profit credit counseling, the last thing that you need is to be scammed.  If a non profit credit counseling company takes advantage of you, you’re wasting money that you desperately need to get out of your credit mess, and you’re getting further behind on your bills.  Just because it’s a non profit credit counseling company doesn’t mean it is legitimate.  To get that status, you simply have to file forms with the government.  There are a few other things you should look for when you’re choosing a non profit credit counseling company.

Any legitimate non profit credit counseling company will not charge you for counseling.  It’s a free service offered by these companies.  They make money through the debt repayment plans and loans they offer.  The initial non profit credit counseling should be free, and you should be under no obligation to enroll in a debt management program.  Good non profit credit counseling services will not recommend debt consolidation or other plans automatically.  They will only do so if it is a good step for you to take under the specific circumstances of your unique financial situation.

Look for a non profit credit counseling company that has been in business for at least 10 years.  Companies that have been in business for more than 30 years are best.  This will help you make sure that it’s not a non profit credit counseling company that will vanish into thin air without a trace or not really be able to help you with your debt.

Finally, you should find a non profit credit counseling company that is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA).  Their accreditation should be current.  They should also be a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).  The best agencies are also certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  If you find a company that meets all of these guidelines, you will be dealing with a legitimate company.  If you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to ask questions of the counselor before discussing any of your personal details.  If they don’t know or won’t answer, you should look for a different company.
